The Experimental Research in Management Accounting (EXRIMA) Summer School and Conference took place at Justus Liebig University Giessen from June 13 to 16, 2023. The event was generously financially supported by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
The Summer School was taught by Willie Choi, Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Willie Choi has received several awards for his teaching and research, including the Pitt Business Teacher of the Year, the Impact on Management Accounting Practice Award, and the Best Early-Career Researcher in Management Accounting Award. In addition, Willie was named to the “40 Under 40 Most Outstanding Business Professors” list. The international participants were thus able to benefit from the high level of technical expertise in the field of experimental research. During the three-day workshop, relevant research contributions from recent years were analyzed and discussed. This provided the young researchers with a sound basis for experimental research. The focus of the summer school was on the development of a theoretical foundation and the concrete design of an experiment. In addition, the participants had the opportunity to take part in interactive discussions, present current research results and receive valuable feedback.
A total of six current international experimental research projects were presented at the conference. The presentations covered a wide range of topics, from artificial intelligence to failure awards. Strengths, weaknesses, potential for improvement, practical relevance and positioning of the papers were highlighted. The intensive discussion enabled further improvement of the papers and was perceived as very positive by the speakers.
Both the summer school and the conference were a complete success, especially in light of the intensive exchange in old and new national and international networks. The young researchers in particular benefited immensely from the exchange with international participants. The organizers are therefore certain that the EXRIMA Summer School and Conference will be continued in the future.
